Francisco Lindor Returning to Form

0 20

The Mets just completed a nine-game stretch that saw many negatives. The team was swept for the first time this season against the Rays, then subsequently swept again in their next series in Atlanta. New York finished the week a game out of first place after being up 5.5 games just nine days earlier. However, a bright spot in all of the negative is that Francisco Lindor seems to be back to doing Francisco Lindor things.

While Lindor’s streak of games in which he homered leading to Mets victories was snapped at 28, one shy of Carl Furillo‘s 29-game major league record, Lindor can still take some solace.

Lindor homered for the second straight night in Philadelphia, taking Max Lazar deep Sunday night. It was also Lindor’s second straight multi-hit game, coming off a 0-for-20 stretch.

Lindor’s tough time at the plate has directly coincided with his return after fracturing his right pinky toe in a game against the Dodgers earlier in June.

The Mets’ star shortstop will be the first to say that the toe was no excuse, but the stats show it might have at least been a factor. Lindor completed that game against Los Angeles, slashing .279/.353/.490, and entered Saturday slashing .264/.339/.451, a decrease in OPS of 53 points in just 13 games.

While for a mere mortal, those stats would still be nice, Lindor and company expect better. His OPS is back up to .816 now after his four hits, three of them for extra bases, over the weekend.

In a league that often delves deep into whether a player is lucky or unlucky, Lindor is right about where he should be. With an xBA (.265) and xSLG (.467) within ten points of their “real” counterparts, Lindor’s underlying metrics suggest consistency is in his future.

Whether it’s his performance, his leadership capabilities on and off the field, his ability to post, or his demeanor when he hits a big home run, Francisco Lindor seems to have matured into the beacon of consistency for this Mets franchise.
