Mariners Game #72 Preview: 6/17/25, BOS at SEA
The Mariners take on former Dodger Walker Buehler and the Red Sox
The less said about last night’s vibe-killing loss, the better. Is this why no one reads the previews?

News:
Dan Wilson stopped just short of calling Logan Gilbert’s performance last night “mid-season form”, but said he was overall very pleased with how Gilbert’s stuff looked. He wouldn’t commit to a bump in Gilbert’s pitch count next outing, saying the team would assess start-by-start and weigh any extenuating factors before determining if he’d be at his usual 100-pitch mark next outing.
Roster news: The Mariners claimed OF Jacob Hurtubise (HURT-uh-bees) off waivers from Cincinnati. The light-hitting speedster gets on base and can swipe a ton of bags, but doesn’t have any power to speak of. He’ll report to Triple-A Tacoma.
In rehabbing news, Luke Raley will start for Tacoma tonight as he continues to work on getting his timing back against live pitching. Wilson says Raley has been hitting the ball hard in Tacoma, but the team will ask Raley where he feels his swing is at before making any decisions about activating him.
Captain’s Log:
Even though it was his start day today, Bryan Woo hosted a “reverse autograph” event today for kids from Seattle Children’s Hospital, where patients could come and sign for their favorite Mariners players. “To see Bryan doing that is pretty impressive. Baseball affords guys a platform, and I think it’s important—it’s somewhat of a responsibility for all of us to use our platforms in a positive way, and these guys understand that. I think it’s awesome,” said Dan Wilson.

Today in Mariners history:
- 1987: Playing in his second-ever professional game after being selected first overall in the MLB Draft, Ken Griffey Jr. recorded his first professional hit as a member of the Bellingham “Baby Ms,” a game-tying three-run homer against Everett. The approximate spot where the homer touched down is marked with a plaque outside of Everett Memorial Stadium.
- 1994: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 30th home run of the season into the fountains at Kauffman Stadium, tying Babe Ruth’s record for most home runs before July 1. Also, some other stuff happened.
