Back-To-Back Homers Fuel O’s Win
In a game that started with a Mike Trout two-run homerun off the top of the left field foul pole, the Baltimore Orioles persevered to defeat the Los Angeles Angels (33-36) 6-5 on Saturday afternoon. The Angels added a pair of homeruns from thirdbaseman Luis Rengifo but it was back-to-back homeruns by the Orioles in the sixth inning that were the difference in the game.
Trailing 4-3 entering the home half of the sixth, Ramon Laureano (0 for 3, R, BB) walked on six pitches to open the inning. Cedric Mullins (2 for 4, HR, R, 2 RBI) followed that walk with his 11th homerun of the season, a 394 ft. shot to centerfield. Gary Sanchez (1 for 3, HR, R, RBI, HBP) followed that with his first homerun as an Oriole, giving the team a 6-4 lead.
The Orioles scored two runs in the third inning with some two out magic. Adley Rutschman (2 for 3, R, BB) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4, R, RBI) single. Henderson stole second a scored on a Jordan Westburg (1 for 4, 2 RBI) single, giving the Birds a 3-2 lead at that point.
Westburg’s first inning groundout allowed Jackson Holliday (1 for 5, 2B, R) to score the Orioles’ first run.
Coby Mayo went 2 for 4 with a double and Dylan Carlson went 1 for 4.
Tomoyuki Sugano did not produce the type of start that fans have grown accustomed to as he struggled through 4.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits (HR), walking 2, striking out 4 and hitting 2 batters. He threw 80 pitches, 46 for strikes and induced just 7 swings and misses.
Keegan Akin (2-0) relieved Sugano and allowed 1 run on 1 hit, a homerun, with 2 strikeouts over 1.1 innings to get credit for the win.
Seranthony Dominguez (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K), Andrew Kittredge (0.2 IP, R, H, HR, BB, K) and Bryan Baker (0.1 IP) formed the bridge to Felix Bautista who earned his 14th save of the season for a 1 walk, 1 strikeout ninth inning.
