Mets Minors Recap: Jonah Tong Strikes Out 11 In Hitless Outing

0 43

Blade Tidwell was solid in a Syracuse win backed by a Drew Gilbert RBI triple, Jonah Tong dominated in the Rumble Ponies win, Brooklyn was nearly no-hit in their loss, and St. Lucie was rained out in Wednesday’s slate of games.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (28-31) 7, Buffalo Bisons (23-34) 6

BOX SCORE

Syracuse put across all of its offense by the sixth inning, and the month of June has been much kinder to Drew Gilbert already, with him already at four RBIs for the month compared to the eight he had in all of May. Despite the seven runs on Wednesday, Syracuse has not been hitting well as a team with no regulars with an OPS over .800. Hayden Senger has shown some better contact numbers than usual, albeit without much in the extra base hit department, despite his double on the day.

  • RHP Blade Tidwell (4.02 ERA) 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 HR allowed (51 of 89 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Dedniel Núñez (4.50 ERA) 1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 HR allowed (11 of 21 pitches for strikes)

Blade Tidwell was solid on the mound, scattering six hits over six innings, including two home runs, one to Blue Jays top prospect Orelvis Martinez. He walked hitters in four of his six innings, including one on a challenge call. Dedniel Núñez has struggled with location all season, allowing a home run that took it from a non-save situation to a one-run game, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base and score.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (35-17) 4 , Somerset Patriots (24-28) 3

Jett Williams continued to do Jett Williams things, getting two hits on the day and walking once. Despite scoring no runs on the day, Williams continues to be the catalyst for the first-place Rumble Ponies. Alex Ramirez continues to be trouble when he gets on base, stealing two bases today to bring his total to 20 for the season. Kevin Parada brought his OPS over .600 for the season with his two walk day.

  • RHP Jonah Tong (2.25 ERA) 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 1 HR allowed (55 of 87 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Douglas Orellana (1.17 ERA) 2 IP, 2 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Ryan Lambert (2.77 ERA) 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER
  • RHP Dylan Ross (4.91 ERA) 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R (1 ER) 3 K, 1 HR allowed

Jonah Tong was electric on Wednesday, striking out 11 hitters while not allowing a hit. Tong walked all three of his batters today in a rough second inning when he appeared to lose his location. In 49 innings, Tong has walked more hitters (27) than he has allowed hits (23). While that would normally be a concern, he is striking batters out at an astronomical clip as opponents can’t get a read on the pitches out of his hand. Dylan Ross came out and earned the save, but not without making it exciting. Ross has struggled to start June, allowing four runs in two and one-third innings, despite striking out six batters and walking zero.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (37-16) 0, Wilmington Blue Rocks 2

BOX SCORE

Brooklyn had two baserunners on the day, and another Cyclone would not reach base after the second inning. Despite this, they only struck out twice as a team. Blue Rocks starter Travis Sthele generated thirteen groundouts.

  • LHP Jonathan Santucci (4.32 ERA)  5 1/3 IP, 5 H, 5 K (51 of 74 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Matt Allan (4.50 ERA) 1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 K (21 of 30 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Raimon Gomez (9.95 ERA) 1 IP, 2 K

Jonathan Santucci was great on the mound today, generating weak contact and striking hitters out while scattering five hits over 5 1/3 innings. It is worth noting his velocity was up in the 95-96 MPH range, topping out at 97 MPH, and three of the hits he allowed did not leave the infield. Matt Allan got roughed up in his first appearance since May 25th, getting through the sixth inning after relieving Santucci but struggling in the seventh, giving up three doubles, two of the ground-rule double variety, before striking out the final two hitters he faced. Raimon Gomez had a step in the right direction, allowing no runs in his inning of work. Since his promotion to Brooklyn, Gomez has allowed runs in three of his six appearances.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (28-23) vs. Dunedin Blue Jays (26-26)

The St. Lucie Mets vs. Dunedin Blue Jays game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, June 5th, starting at 4:00 P.M.
