Minor League Recap - Six Run Inning in Lake County Leads to Captains Victory

Chase DeLauter is back in Columbus, Akron swept the double header, and Alfonsin Rosario’s 2-HR, 3-xBH night helps Captains victory.

Columbus Clippers (21-25) - AAA

Chase DeLauter made his long anticipated return to the Columbus Clippers in Friday night’s loss. Aaron Davenport, recently promoted from AA Akron, made his debut. The righty threw one complete inning, giving up three runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out two. RHP Mason Hickman got the loss, his first, throwing three innings. He also allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two. Hickman walked two. RHP Zak Kent and RHP Franco Aleman each pitched two innings of one hit, shutout baseball. Kent and Aleman also both struck out three. LHP Parker Mushinski closed the game giving up a solo home run to close the game.

Columbus had a strong first inning, putting up five runs. Petey Halpin lead it off with a double to right and was immediately batted in on Brayan Rocchio’s two run homer.

Chase DeLauter and Johnathan Rodríguez drew back to back singles. C.J. Kayfus drew a walk to load the bases. Kody Huff hit a two-run double before the first out was recorded. Yordy Valdes grounded out to second, scoring Kayfus. The side was retired with the Clippers up by two runs. Unfortunately the Clippers weren’t able to maintain the lead and couldn’t fight back to get the win.

Chase DeLauter hit a 104.9 mph ground ball single in the second pitch he saw for his only hit of the night. Petey Halpin went 2-for-5 with a run and a double. Brayan Rocchio went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a HR and a great defensive play.

Kody Huff went 1-for-4 with a two RBI double.

Doug Nikhazy gets the start for Columbus tonight with a 7:05 PM EDT start at Huntington Park.

Akron RubberDucks (21-21) - AA

The RubberDucks swept the Altoona Curve in Friday’s doubleheader. Game 1 saw RHP Tommy Mace go 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks. Mace, despite the shaky start, struck out two. RHP Jake Miller continues to solidify himself as a tourniquet pitcher, stopping the bleeding long enough for the offense to retake the lead. Miller earned his third win of the season on his 2.1 innings pitched. He only allowed one hit and struck out one. RHP Magnus Ellerts threw the fifth and sixth, also going scoreless. He walked on batter, but struck out three. RHP Zane Morehouse closed the game, giving up a hit and a walk. He allowed one run, but struck out three. The Curve offense weren’t able to overcome the four run deficit, falling to the RubberDucks.

Cooper Ingle hit a lead-off double in the first inning. Kahlil Watson brought him home with a double of his own.

In the bottom of the second Joe Lampe hit a lead-off double of his own. Alex Moony and Michael Turconi drew back-to-back walks. Cooper Ingle hit his second double of the game, a two-run line driver to center.

Cooper went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. David Fry, on rehab assignment, went 0-for-3 with a RBI ground out. Joe Lampe went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and his first home run of the season.

Game 2 Box Score

Game 2 saw very effective pitching from the RubberDucks pitching staff. RHP Carter Spivey earned his second win of the season, throwing four complete innings of shut out baseball. Spivey only allowed five baserunners, two hits and three walks. He struck out two. RHP Zach Jacobs came in to finish the last three innings of the game. Jacobs continued the shutout, only allowing two baserunners, both via walks, and struck out two. He earned his first save of the season.

In the bottom of the second, Dayan Frias and Joe Lampe hit back to back singles. Lampe’s single was a line drive to center that allowed Frias to reach third, leaving second open for Lampe to successfully steal. Back-to-back sac fly balls from Guy Lipscomb and Alex Mooney scored Frias and Lampe, putting the Ducks up by two.

In the bottom of the fourth, Joe Lampe hit a two-out single to center again. Guy Lipscomb hit a trip to right, scoring Lampe.

Guy continued his great game with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Frias and Lampe hit back-to-back singles again and were brought home with Guy’s double.

Cooper Ingle went 2-for-3 on the night. Frias went 2-for-3 with two runs. Lampe went 3-for-3 with three runs. Lipscomb went 2-for-2 with three RBI.

The RubberDucks play tonight at 7:05 PM EDT with RHP Austin Peterson getting the start. Hopefully the rain can stay away to avoid more double headers and delayed starts for the players and fans at Canal Park.

Lake County Captains (23-19) - High A

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson finally earned his first win of the season as the Captains took down the Lugnuts. Wilkinson threw five complete innings, he gave up two runs on three hits, both solo shots. The lefty walked two and struck out two. RHP Alonzo Richardson pitched the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning, allowing only one run. Richardson gave up four hits, no walks, and struck out two. RHP Kyle Scott closed out the game. Scott walked a baserunner and gave up a run, not earned. A passed ball allowed the lead off walk to reach second and ultimately score.

Alfonsin Rosario had a fantastic night! In the bottom of the first he hit a two out double, his first extra base hit for the night. The bulk of the Captains runs came in the bottom of the second, a six run affair. Jose Devers lead off with a single. Wuilfredo Antunez singled with one out, then Maick Collado drew a walk to load the bases. Jonah Advincula doubled to right two tie the game at 2-2. Christian Knapczyk had a RBI ground out for the second out of the inning to give the Captains the lead. Ralphy Velazquez extended the lead with a RBI double to right. Alfonsin Rosario tacked on his second extra base hit and first home run of the game with a home run to center.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Captains lead extended to five runs. Jacob Cozart hit a lead off single and Antunez drew a two-out walk. Collado hit a long single to left, scoring JCozy to put the Caps up 7-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Alfonsin Rosario continued his extra base palooza with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to center that scored the Captains final run.

The Captains play today at 4:00 PM EDT at Classic Auto Group Park with LHP Jackson Humphries will get the start for Lake County.

Lynchburg Hillcats (25-18) - Low A

The Woodpeckers bested the Hillcats in Friday night’s matchup. LHP Rafe Schlesinger had his third loss of the season. Schlesinger gave up three runs, two earned on four hits and three walks. In his 1.2 innings of work, he struck out two. RHP Xavier Martinez came in for some bulk relief. He pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out six batters. LHP Donovan Zsak gave up another run on three walks. In his inning of work he struck out two. RHP Eudry Alcantara pitched two innings of scoreless ball. He gave up three hits to close out the game.

The Hillcats struck first in the top of the first with a lead off walk to Nick Mitchell. Mitchell stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Welby Francisca hit a two-run double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was stranded in scoring position as the next three batters got out. In the top of the second, Jeffrey Mercedes singled to right and Garrett Howe drew a walk. Another throwing error, this time a failed pick-off attempt, allowed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Rober Lopez drew a walk to load the bases, but only one scored when Mitchell hit a one run single. Howe tried to score from second but was thrown out at home.

Nick Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a run, RBI, and two walks. Welbyn Francisca went 1-for-4 with a RBI and a walk. Jeffrey Mercedes went 1-for-4 with a run.

RHP Jervis Alfaro will start for the Hillcats tonight with a 7:05 PM EST first pitch at SEGRA Stadium.
