Baty Leads Offense in 5-1 win over Boston

After a dismal few days offensively for the Mets, the club needed to get something going in to the series finale against the Red Sox on Wednesday night. A task that seemed tall with Tylor Megill (3-4, 1.34 ERA) on the mound for the Mets against Boston’s lefty Garrett Crochet (4-3, 2.04 ERA).

The offense exploded for five runs, a total that eclipsed more runs than their last three games combined. Brett Baty had a huge night, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. After struggling over the course of the last week with the rest of the Mets’ offense, Baty needed a big breakthrough night, as did the Mets’ offensive confidence. And that’s exactly what Baty gave them.

Francisco Lindor was also a massive factor for the Mets. He clubbed a leadoff double, and also homered over the monster in the top of the ninth to end a team 217 at-bat streak without a longball.

It was the kind of night the Mets were desperately in search of. And it was enough to salvage a series at Fenway against the second-place Red Sox. Meanwhile, on the pitching side, the Mets got enough from Megill and a standout performance from the bullpen to hold on to their lead.

Megill cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He gave up two singles to Nick Sogard and Carlos Narváez. He then hit Ceddanne Rafaela with a pitch to load the bases before Jarren Duran hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the Red Sox’s first run of the night to the game 1-1. He then walked Rafael Devers as he could not get out of the inning, which forced Carlos Mendoza to go to his bullpen.

Huascar Brazobán came in to relieve Megill. At the climax of the game and with the bases loaded, he struck out Bregman to get the Mets out of the inning. It was reminiscent of the relief outing against the Yankees, where Brazobán escaped a jam by striking out Anthony Volpe.

Overall, Brazoban pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday and struck out four. He’s been the Mets’ best reliever this season and lowered his ERA to 0.90.

Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz followed, securing two more scoreless innings to earn the Mets their first win since last Saturday in the Bronx. It got the club to 30 wins, joining the Dodgers and Phillies to reach the win mark.

Outside the dramatic performances was Luis Torrens. The catcher went 2-for-3 with a run scored on a strong night for the Mets’ catcher.

Juan Soto also had a nice night at the plate, walking and driving in a run to give the Mets a three-run lead. The sac fly was a missile off the bat, and barely missed going off the Monster in left center field.

Player of the Game

The player of the game for Wednesday is Brett Baty. He was 2-for-4, with 3 RBIs, driving in three of the Mets’ five runs scored.

Coming into Wednesday night, left-handed hitters had a .162 average against Crochet and a .160 average against Bernardino. Baty defied those odds, driving in RBIs off of both pitchers.

On Deck

The Mets will have an off day on Thursday. On Friday, they return back to Citi Field to open a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The probable pitchers for that series are:
