Mets Minors Recap: Jonah Tong Flirts With Perfection

Jonah Tong delivered a masterful performance on Saturday, coming just shy of a perfect game. The 21-year-old dazzled with 13 strikeouts before being pulled due to a pitch count limit. Over the last 19 innings pitched, he’s tallied up an impressive 40 strikeouts, bringing his season ERA down to a stellar 2.57 to go along with a 44.7% strikeout rate.

Additionally, Ronny Mauricio continued his rehab, at the Double-A level, where he went 1-for-3 with a double in one of Binghamton’s doubleheader games.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (18-20) 9,  Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-15) 2

BOX SCORE

Right fielder Jared Young went 2-for-5 with his third home run and three RBIs. Donovan Walton and Luke Ritter also contributed, with Walton launching a three-run homer and Ritter driving in a run of his own.

Blade Tidwell impressed with 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out five while allowing just one walk. Tyler Zuber tossed a scoreless frame and one punchout. Grant Hartwig closed it out with two strong innings and four strikeouts.

Double A

Game 1: Binghamton Rumble Ponies 5 (17-12), Reading Fightin Phils (8-20) 7

Ronny Mauricio picked up right where he left off in his Binghamton debut, going 1-for-3 with an RBI double as he continues his rehab. William Lugo also chipped in with a 1-for-2 performance, driving in a run with a double of his own.

It was a tough night on the mound for the Binghamton staff. Jonathan Pintaro was tagged for five earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings, while Luis Moreno and Alex Carrillo combined for 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out three.

Game 2: Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6 (18-12), Reading Fightin Phils (8-21) 0

BOX SCORE

Jett Williams and Ryan Clifford both had two RBIs for Binghamton. Williams fifth-inning double drive in both of his runs while Clifford’s single drove in both of his runs.

As mentioned above, Jonah Tong turned in a sensational outing, striking out 13 in 6 2/3 perfect innings. TJ Shook capped off Tong’s perfection with one final strikeout to seal the perfect game, the first in Binghamton’s history, and leading to 14 strikeouts combined between the two.

High-A

Brooklyn (20-11) 6, Ashville Tourists (14-18) 1

BOX SCORE

Four different hitters drove in a run for the Brooklyn offense. Jacob Reimer and Ronald Hernandez led the way with two RBIs each. Reimer and Eli Serrano III were the two Cyclones who posted multi-hit games. Carson Benge did post his sixth double of the season.

Right-hander pitcher Noah Hall turned in a strong start with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits while striking out two. Jace Beck and Dylan Ross followed with clean relief appearances, each striking out a pair in 1 1/3 innings and one inning, respectively.

Low-A

 St Lucie Mets (17-15) 5, Clearwater Thrashers (18-14) 10

BOX SCORE

Designated hitter Corey Collins made the most of his day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with his first home run. Trey Snyder chipped in with a solid 2-for-4 performance, driving in two runs.

St Lucie’s bullpen struggled Saturday, with Frank Elissalt allowing two earned runs in just a third of an inning. Christofer Gomez followed with 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs despite striking out two, while Jorge De Leon surrendered one run over 1 1/3 innings but managed to notch three strikeouts.

Florida Complex League

FCL-Marlins (4-1) 10, FCL Mets (1-4) 1

BOX SCORE

The FCL Mets’ offense was only held to two hits on Saturday. Jeffry Rosa slugged his second home run of the game, which resulted in the lone Mets run of the game.

Nicolas Carreno, who started the game for the FCL Mets, only recorded a single out before allowing three runs, all via walks and two wild pitches. Jose Guevara followed Carreno, and struggled as well in two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) to go along with three walks and two wild pitches. Luis Alvarez was a bright spot, striking out five through two innings of relatively clean work.
