Phillies shut out, Nola off in opener against Guardians

Nick Castellanos threw out a runner at third base and Kyle Schwarber extended his on-base streak to 44.

Friday’s highlights end there.

After a pair of excellent outings to right the ship of his 2025 season, Aaron Nola didn’t have his best stuff in the series opener against the Guardians. The long ball bug returned to bite him, as two homers contributed to a six-hit, five-inning, four-run outing. He left with the game 4-0, and a two-run José Ramirez homer against Joe Ross a couple innings later made it 6-0.

Those last two runs were irrelevant because the Phillies’ offense cooled off in a big way, if only for a night. Their streak of five consecutive seven-plus-run performances ended with a shutout; Gavin Williams blanked them for five innings before the Guardians’ bullpen kept them off the scoreboard.

For his part, Trea Turner kept hitting. He racked up two more hits on Friday to up his season average to .315. In eight May games, he has six multi-hit outings.

Bryce Harper is not as hot. He went 0-for-4 with a hat trick. He’s down to .229 on the season and .212 in May.

Ranger Suárez will make his second start of the season on Saturday.
