MMO Roundtable: Pete Alonso Aside, Who Are We Most Impressed By So Far?
We’re off to a really fun start to the season. The excitement is contagious. Let’s Go Mets!
With all that, there are certain players we’ve been especially impressed with so far—much more than we thought we’d be before the season. Pete Alonso is one of them that every Mets fan can agree on. But besides for Alonso, who else has been impressive? Here’s who we at MMO think has been the most impressive so far.

Outside of Alonso, the pitching staff, especially Griffin Canning and Clay Holmes have impressed me. For something that was seen as a huge weakness has become a strength and it’s a testament to their talents but also the commitment to building better ballplayer organizationally by Stearns and Cohen.

I have been really impressed with the team’s at bats, specifically late in games. In innings 7-9, the Mets are slashing .271/.360/.437/.797 this season. It has been really cool to watch them make things difficult for opposing bullpen’s, coming from behind on a few different occasions. Definitely a good characteristic for a team with the highest of expectations!

I’d say for me I’ve really been impressed with Griffin Canning.
He’s definitely settled into his first year in New York very well. He’s always composed on the mound, never seems to look tense or rattled by adversity. Yes he’s been in the NL East before with the Braves, but to come out and perform like he has with 31 strikeouts and just a 2.61 ERA. It’s been impressive to watch him this season.
I would also agree with Clay Holmes being impressive making a quick adjustment from throwing out of the bullpen with the Yankees to now starting and having as much success as he’s had. He as well stays composed, has good command and control on the mound.
David Melendi
I agree with all of the above and would add Max Kranick. He hadn’t pitched in an MLB game in three years and he’s been excellent out of the bullpen.
Patrick Glynn
This may be recency bias, but Tyrone Taylor is the perfect fourth outfielder. In typically healthy times, he’s one of the best defenders in the league and puts up competitive pinch-hit at-bats and is serviceable in spot starts. But he’s also ready to play a starter’s workload, as he has since Jose Siri was injured. Since April 16, he’s slashed .333/.379/.537/.916 over 59 plate appearances, and he’s one of the fastest guys on the team. I’ve been really impressed with him this year.
