Winker Out 6-8 Weeks, Minter Done For Season
It gets worse before it gets better, right?
Before Monday’s series opener in Arizona, Mike Puma of the NY Post reported a few injury updates on Mets players. The team officially placed Jesse Winker on the injured list. He left Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader early with a Grade 2 oblique strain. He’ll likely be out for at least six to eight weeks. The Mets recalled Brett Baty from Syracuse to take his spot on the roster.
Winker was hitting .239/.321/.418/.739 with eight extra-base hits to begin 2025 but was on a nice stretch before going down. In the past seven games, the lefty hit .300/.400/.350. He injured himself in the field on a throw to home plate (he only played five innings in the outfield, DHing the rest of the season).
On the pitching side, A.J. Minter was dealt a crushing blow. He’ll undergo season-ending surgery for a torn lat next Monday. The news comes just a day after the Mets’ other southpaw, Danny Young, announced his season is over and will get Tommy John surgery.
Like Winker and Young, Minter’s loss will be greatly felt in the Mets’ clubhouse. The southpaw was elite for the Mets throughout the first month of 2025, pitching to a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings. He struck out 14 batters and allowed only two earned runs. Génesis Cabrera now stands as the Mets’ only lefty in the bullpen.
