After the game, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that Starling Marte’s early exit from Sunday’s doubleheader finale was pre-planned. Evidently, given it was his first time playing in the field, they wanted to manage him carefully.

The New York Mets have seen an outfielder leave the game early in both ends of their doubleheader Sunday. First, it was Jesse Winker, who left in the first game of the day in St. Louis. Winker was removed due to right-side tightness and is set to undergo imaging.

In the second game of the doubleheader, it was outfielder Starling Marte who exited early. Marte started in the field for the first time this season, much like Winker. The veteran outfielder was replaced in the bottom of the fifth inning by José Azócar.

Marte’s last notable action was a ground out to the first baseman. Prior to that, Marte drove in two via a single and he also had a walk and stolen base in the game’s second inning.

Marte is slashing .193/.299/.333 on the season. The Mets have yet to announce why Marte left the game.
