Can’t Tame The Tigers

0 6

Sunday’s 7-0 shutout at the hands of the Detroit Tigers gave them a three game sweep over the Baltimore Orioles and sent the Birds home with a 1-5 record on the road trip. The Orioles were outscored 29-10 collectively on the road trip, a trip that ironically began with a 7-0 shutout by the Washington Nationals.

These are not the best of times for the Baltimore Orioles.

The old baseball adage states that good pitching beats good hitting. If that is the case, good pitching really beats poor hitting. That’s what happened Sunday in Comerica Park. Detroit pitching, led by Tarik Skubal (3-2) held the Orioles to just 5 hits, each being the lone hit in an inning. Skubal baffled the Birds and recorded the win with his 6.0 inning effort in which he allowed 4 hits, struck out 11 and hit a batter.

Skubal bested Baltimore’s Dean Kremer (2-4) who labored over 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Kremer threw 97 pitches, 59 for strikes, in the loss, his fourth.

Recently called up Grant Wolfram allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1 in 1.0 inning of relief.

Once again, the Orioles hitters were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Jorge Mateo went 2 for 3 with 2 stolen bases.

Gary Sanchez went 0 for 2 and was hit by a pitch twice.

Ramon Laureano, Gunnar Henderson and Ramon Urias each went 1 for 4.

Ryan Mountcastle went 0 for 3 with the only walk given up by Tigers pitchers.
