Today in White Sox History: April 20
Addie Joss flummoxes the South Siders, once again
1910
In a 1-0 win during Chicago’s final season at South Side Park, Cleveland’s Addie Joss no-hit the White Sox for the second time in three seasons. Context clues from the box score suggest possibly just one South Side runner, Freddy Parent, even reached second base. Doc White scattered five singles and a double, holding Cleveland to just one run in the hard-luck loss.
What makes this no-hitter, the fourth all-time thrown against the White Sox, additionally interesting is that it marks the only time in franchise history that the same pitcher threw successive no-nos against them; Joss tossed the No. 3 no-hitter all-time against the Sox, in 1908.
1927
Opening Day 1927 is traditionally given as the date that Comiskey Park’s upper deck expansion, but the seats weren’t quite ready to welcome baseball back to the South Side. But a capacity crowd of 30,000 filled the lower bowl to see Cleveland upend the South Siders, 5-4.
The upper deck wasn’t opened to fans until the beginning of the next White Sox homestand, as 37,000 saw the White Sox host the Yankees on May 7 and 52,000 on May 8 — back-to-back all-time Chicago baseball attendance marks.
Ted Lyons took the loss in this game, despite three hits apiece at the top of Chicago’s order from Willie Kamm and Roger Peckinpaugh.
1933
In a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Browns in front of 3,000 fans at Comiskey Park, left fielder Al Simmons kept the game tied 4-4 in the ninth with an unassisted double play on a line drive from Rick Ferrell, doubling off Ski Millelo. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mule Haas doubled and Lew Fonseca singled him home to move the White Sox to 5-2 on the season.
2016
Chris Sale became the first four-game winner of the season, surrendering one unearned run and just two hits (to Mike Trout) over seven innings in a 2-1 win over the Angels. Josh Nelson covered the contest for South Side Sox.
2018
Danny Farquhar collapsed in the White Sox dugout after throwing 15 pitches in the sixth inning of a 10-0 loss to the Houston Astros. He regained consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent several emergency surgeries but eventually made a full recovery from a brain aneurysm. Brett Ballantini had the South Side Sox game coverage, with several status updates.
Farquhar never pitched in the majors again, but returned to the White Sox in 2021 to become pitching coach of the Winston-Salem Dash.
2022
White Sox starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel allowed 10 runs, eight earned, in only a single inning of work in an 11-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader in Cleveland. The southpaw gave up eight consecutive hits in the inning. Leigh Allan had the South Side Sox game coverage.
Keuchel became the first Sox pitcher to allow 10 runs in an inning since Milt Gaston on June 13, 1934.
Also in this game, Tim Anderson flipped off Cleveland fans, resulting in a suspension.
