Cleveland Got Roughed Up in Birdland

The Cleveland Guardians were looking to get their 10th win of the season after winning on Tuesday night in Baltimore. They had Gavin Williams on the bump against Dean Kremer, who got the start for the Orioles. After it was all said and done, the Guardians dropped to 9-8 on the season after losing 9-1.

A grand slam by Gunner Henderson at the bottom of the second gave the O’s an early lead, and they rode with it all the way. Williams just had a rough night despite pitching 6 23 innings of work. He did strike out four for some silver linings, but he also walked four in the process. Ramon Laureano's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to end Williams’ night. His ERA shot up to 4.58. This was a night for him to forget.

Joey Cantillo came in to relieve Williams and got a strikeout to end the inning. The only batter he faced. Triston McKenzie, however, came into the bottom of the eighth and gave up an early home run to Ryan O’Hearn, making it a 6-1 game. His night ended with giving up four runs on three hits to see his ERA balloon to 11.12. It was just a night of woes for the pitching staff as the Orioles tagged them for six runs on six hits, three of them for home runs.

Offensively, the Guardians did manage eight hits. Gabriel Arias stays red hot with his fourth home run of the season. It was a solo shot in the top of the third after the Orioles’ four-run second inning. He went one for three in the game. Other notable hitters:

  • Daniel Schneemann went two for four
  • Kyle Manzardo went one for three
  • Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana went two for four each in the effort.

Overall, a night to forget for the Guardians as the series is now 1-1. If there is any chance to win this series, pitching will have to start early. Furthermore, while eight hits are good, just one run against any team will not get it done. Just a tough night overall, but we have a long way to go. The rubber match will be on Thursday, April 17, with a 6:35 pm Eastern first pitch. Tanner Bibee gets the start for the Guardians. The Orioles will go with Tomoyuki Sugano as their starter.
