The Barons triumph, while the other three affiliates get rained out
Charlotte Knights vs Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp - Game was postponed to a doubleheader on Saturday
Birmingham Barons 4, Chattanooga Lookouts 1 (11 innings) (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
Birmingham fought hard for their 11-inning win. The Barons had runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but both ended when Oscar Colás and Jacob Burke were caught stealing second. It wasn’t until the fourth inning when the Barons broke through for an early lead in the top of the fourth, with a DJ Gladney sacrifice fly that brought in William Bergolla. The Barons went on to endure a six-inning scoring drought, mustering just four hits off of the Lookouts in the middle of the game. The offense didn’t come alive again, in fact, until the 11th inning. Gladney doubled to left field, scoring the ghost runner, and he scored on Wildred Veras’ triple after advancing to third from a wild pitch. The Lookouts handed the Barons their fourth run from another wild pitch, emptying the bases.
Birmingham’s pitchers stood strong against the Lookouts: Grant Taylor started the game with three scoreless frames, allowing only two walks while striking out three. Tyler Schweitzer stepped in, as it seems he’ll be piggybacking starts with Taylor this early season, and went on to pitch five dazzling innings, retiring the side in three straight frames while collecting eight strikeouts. And when Schweitzer did allow a run, it wasn’t earned. Tyler Davis, Jarold Rosado, and Zach Franklin closed out the game against a slow Lookouts lineup that only had three hits.
