Texas baseball moves near the top of latest Top 25 poll

0 1

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Behind a home sweep of previously No. 3 Georgia, the Texas baseball team is now ranked No. 2 in the country.

The Longhorns moved up three spots in the latest D1Baseball.com poll released Monday and sit behind Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas. The teams will clash May 1-3 in Fayetteville.

Texas (26-4, 11-1 SEC) clinched the sweep over the Bulldogs in dramatic fashion Sunday via a Rylan Galvan walk-off home run in the 10th inning. It was Galvan's only hit of the game and his 10th home run of the season.

Six of the top 10 teams are from the SEC, including the top three with Louisiana State settling in at No. 3. Clemson is No. 4, followed by Tennessee at No. 5. The Volunteers were last week's No. 1 team before losing a home series to Texas A&M.

Ole Miss is No. 6, Georgia fell back to No. 7, Oregon State is No. 8, Florida State is at No. 9 and UCLA rounds out the top 10. Auburn (No. 11), Alabama (No. 12) Vanderbilt (No. 17) and Oklahoma (No. 19) are other SEC teams in the top 25.

Under head coach Jim Schlossnagle and pitching coach Max Weiner, the Longhorns' pitching staff has flipped the script from last season and is one of the country's best. Texas is No. 2 in Division I with a 3.04 team ERA, just ahead of Tennessee's 3.10. Western Kentucky leads the country at 2.59.

The Longhorns are also No. 2 in hits allowed per nine innings at 6.76 and tied for No. 4 in WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) with Arkansas and Vanderbilt at 1.16.

Texas hosts Houston Christian at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to face the Kentucky Wildcats in a three-game SEC series beginning Friday.
