The Mariners face a tough slate of pitching from Detroit over the next three games, starting tonight

The Detroit Tigers roar into town tonight with something to prove, as they drew the unfortunate card to be the first team to face the fully operational battle station that is the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don’t think that 0-3 record is representative of who the Tigers are; they’re a young, talented team that surprised everyone by earning a playoff berth last year getting hot and ripping off an incredible run of wins while the Mariners, theoretically further along in their contention arc, fell out of the race. They’ll bring to bear the top of their fearsome rotation, plus tonight, the season debut of one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, Jackson Jobe.

Today’s Lineups:

Emerson Hancock takes the ball for the Mariners with the standard lineup behind him. Donovan Solano sits, while Jorge Polanco is back in the lineup at third base.

And here’s how the Tigers line up behind their young starter Jobe.

News:

You might notice there’s no Gleyber Torres in that Tigers lineup. Today the Tigers announced they have placed him on the 10-day IL retroactive to March 29 with a left oblique strain. Justyn-Henry Malloy has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his place and is leading off tonight.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on the new torpedo bat fad:

“I think anybody would take it into BP to see what it felt like...whether it’s in the cage or in a BP session, something like that would be where a guy would try it. And then if he felt like it was something that he liked, maybe he would give it a shot. But you know, those things are word of mouth. It’s a lot of, you know, player to player, how they feel about it.”

Today’s Game Information:

Game time: 6:40 PT

TV: ROOT Sports with Aaron Goldsmith and Ryan Rowland-Smith, with Jen Mueller doing sideline reports. You can also stream the game on the new ROOT Sports app.

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports with Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr.

Reminder that the series against Detroit is a value game series, and also they’re giving away the Julio Rodríguez bat flip bobblehead (the little bat really spins around) all three games.

This Day in Mariners History:

  • 1996: Alex Rodriguez’s’ single in the 12th inning gave the Mariners a 3-2 Opening Day win vs. White Sox before a national audience on ESPN.
  • 2014: Félix Hernández struck out 11 batters in 6.0 innings in his club-record 7th Opening Day start leading the Mariners to a 10-3 on Opening Day win over the Angels. It was the eighth straight Opening Day win for the Mariners. Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with a 3-run home run and a double to lead the offense. The Mariners set an Opening Day club record with 7 extra base hits.
  • 2018 - Ichiro Suzuki recorded his 3,801st and 3,802nd career hits, passing Hall-of-Famer Cap Anson 21st-most all-time, in a 5-6 Mariners loss to Cleveland. No wonder Ichiro hates Cleveland.
