Williams, Benge and Tong Highlight Mets Spring Breakout Roster

The kids are ready to break out.

Jett Williams, Carson Benge and Jonah Tong headline the list of top Mets prospects on the team’s Spring Breakout roster.

MLB Spring Breakout, which debuted last year, is a four-day showcase of prospect-only games, with every team playing at least one game at Grapefruit or Cactus League venues. It runs from March 13-16, and the Mets play the Nationals on March 16 at 5:05 p.m. ET at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Williams, 21, dealt with an injury-plagued 2024 and slashed .215/.358/.298 over 148 plate appearances at three levels. The 2022 first-round pick flashed more of his potential in 2023 when he hit 13 homers, stole 45 bases, and posted an .876 OPS. He is 2-for-11 in spring training with four walks.

Benge, 22, was selected in the first round last June after a dominant year at Oklahoma State. The left-handed hitting outfielder hit .335/.444/.665 with 18 homers and 24 doubles in 304 plate appearances for the Cowboys. In 15 games at Low-A St. Lucie, he hit two homers, stole three bases and slashed .273/.420/.436 in 69 plate appearances.

Tong, 21, quickly ascended through the minor league system in 2024. He finished his 2024 campaign with a 3.03 ERA in 25 games (23 started), struck out 160 batters, and allowed only 47 walks in 113 innings of work. Across three levels, he held batters to a .202 batting average while producing a 2.33 FIP and 2.88 xFIP.
