5 run second, 4 run third did the damage in Royals win

After putting up just a single run the day before, and only four hits in each of the last two contests, the Royals offense exploded for a 10-4 win over the Padres on Sunday afternoon.

A five-run 2nd inning, followed by a four-run 3rd inning was enough for the Royals.

Maikel Garcia got another start in centerfield today and started the game with a single, Michael Massey playing in left field today, singled to get Garcia to third. Catcher Freddy Fermin, who went 3-4 on the day with three singles and four RBIs, would hit a third straight single to drive Garcia in.

Seth Lugo was on the bump to start the day. He would surrender a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first to Jackson Merrill. He would give up a third run in the bottom of the 3rd on an infield single. Lugo’s final line was 3 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 earned runs, with two strikeouts and a walk.

A John Rave RBI double, Garcia driving in a run on a fielding error, a Fermin RBI single and a 2-run home run by Harold Castro made up the five run second inning for the Royals.

The four run third had a pair of bases loaded walks by Tyler Tolbert and Massey, and was capped off by a Fermin two run single.

Jonathan Bowlan and Ross Stripling threw scoreless innings for the Royals. Steven Cruz gave up a run in one inning of work in the 6th. Ben Kudrna threw two scoreless innings, and Eric Cerantola pitched a scoreless bottom of the 9th.

Some other notables: MJ Melendez was 0-3 with a walk after being inserted for Nick Loftin, who was a late scratch from the lineup. Loftin is dealing with some right wrist soreness. Cavan Biggio played 1st base and was 0-2 with a walk.

The win moves the Royals to 5-4-1 in Spring Training games this year, the win snapped a four-game losing streak. Daniel Lynch IV is scheduled to start tomorrow’s contest against the Rangers. First pitch is at 2:05 p.m. and listened to on KWOD 1660.
