Fan Poll: Which acquisition will have the best season?
There was a theme to the Phillies offseason. The four big leaguers acquired, Jordan Romano, Max Kepler, Jesús Luzardo and Joe Ross, all spent time on the injured list in 2024. The three free agents, Romano, Kepler and Ross, are all on one-year deals. Luzardo, who was acquired via trade with the Miami Marlins, has two years of club control.
The Phillies essentially chose to take big risks to maintain payroll flexibility. It makes sense if you are of the opinion that the 2025 Phillies, before any new acquisitions were made, are at least a playoff team.
Did the Phillies do enough? It’s a question we won’t know the answer to until the end of October. If any of the four newbies make a significant contribution to a World Series championship, consider it a successful offseason.
While none of the players acquired in the offseason are superstars, all four have the potential to make a big impact with the club. Romano sported ERAs under three in each season from 2021 to 2023, but struggled badly in 2024 while dealing with an elbow injury. If he’s healthy and performing like the Romano of old, he could be the perfect Jeff Hoffman replacement.
Ross, the only non bounce-back candidate of the group, is being stretched out, but he is expected to be the Phillies’ swiss army knife in the bullpen. He could eat innings as a multi-inning reliever, pitch in leverage or move to the rotation in case of an injury. After being moved to the bullpen in Milwaukee, Ross posted a 1.67 ERA in 15 games.
The Kepler signing was a bit of a surprise. With the Phillies offense already leaning left-handed, the Phillies opted for upside over fit in the former Minnesota Twin. A hip/core injury hampered his production and resulted in him needing surgery at the end of the year. He will open the season as the Phillies’ every day left fielder. His most recent extended hot stretch at the plate came in the second half of 2023, when he batted .306 with a 926 OPS.
Luzardo is the big prize of the Phillies offseason. The Marlins’ Game 1 starter in the 2023 playoffs against the Phillies, his 2024 season ended in June after suffering a back injury. The Phillies are betting on him recovering nicely from the lumbar stress reaction. If healthy, he’s an above average mid-rotation arm with top-of-the-rotation upside.
