Soto Buys Baty Car to Thank Him for No. 22
Brett Baty will be wearing a new uniform number this year. In related news, he will be driving a new car.
Baty wore No. 22 for the Mets the last three seasons, but Juan Soto had worn that his whole career. On Thursday, Soto surprised Baty with a new black Chevy Tahoe as a thank-you. The moment was captured and posted on the Mets’ Instagram page.
“Oh my god, man,” Baty told Soto after the two hugged. “Look at this thing, you put the bow on, too. This is sick, bro.”
“You know,” Soto told Baty, “I just appreciate, thank you for the number. You know I really appreciate the number, it’s the first one I ever wear. I just wanted to give you something nice.”
Baty: “Well, this is definitely really nice. Tell me how I look in the driver’s seat.”
Soto gave Baty the keys to the car, which had “Thanks for #22” written on the back windshield. Soto said his “sources” told him the Tahoe was Baty’s dream car and it cost $92,000.
Baty told SNY he has been driving the same car since high school, a 2016 Toyota 4Runner with about 150,000 miles on it.
“It’s been going,” he said. “It’s kinda near its last legs, but Toyotas run forever.”
