Luisangel Acuña Homers in Venezuelan Winter League Debut
It’s been a fun offseason for New York Mets fans to watch their top prospects with Jett Williams and Drew Gilbert playing the Arizona Fall League, and it got more exciting on Tuesday night with Luisangel Acuña making his Venezuelan Winter League debut.
Acuña was recently added to the Cardenales de Lara roster and could play the rest of the LVBP season. On Tuesday, he debuted playing shortstop and hitting second behind Nationals infielder Ildemaro Vargas.
Acuña didn’t reach base in his first three at-bats of the game but crushed a three-run homer off Ángel Acevedo to bring the Cardenales de Lara within two runs. Luisangel’s brother, Ronald, also homered in his Venezuelan Winter League debut in 2022, making them the first pair of brothers to homer in their LVBP debut.

Despite a below-average offensive season in Triple-A Syracuse, the 22-year-old Acuña gave the Mets a spark at shortstop when Francisco Lindor could not play due to his hack injury. Acuña had six extra-base hits and six RBIs in 14 games for the Mets during the regular season.
In Arizona Fall League action, Jett Williams went 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and three runs scored. He leads the Scottsdale Scorpions with 16 walks, though he also leads them with 29 strikeouts. Drew Gilbert went 0-for-4 with a walk in the Scorpions’ 11-2 win.
In other offseason action, Mets minor leaguer Luke Ritter went 1-for-5 with a double and run scored for Team USA in Premier12 play. Ritter is 5-for-16 with two doubles and a home run for USA.
