NFL Today: NFL Today: Super Bowl LVIII Rematch

Sean Payton‘s return to the Big Easy went very well as the Denver D smothered the Saints; the defeat really stung New Orleans as it lost its starting CB (Paulson Adebo) for the rest of the year with a broken leg; and Lamar Jackson doesn’t want to talk about the possibility of him becoming the youngest three-time MVP.

George Kittle Getting Back On Track

It’s amazing how quickly things can change.

Just over a year ago, we mentioned how Georgia TE Brock Bowers could become the next George Kittle.

Flash forward to today and guess who’s the only tight end that’s better for Fantasy purposes than Kittle? You go it… it’s rookie Raider star Bowers.

But to say that Kittle is still not a major Fantasy asset is absolutely inaccurate. Okay, he was probably going to be hard pressed to duplicate what he did last season, but there’s no sugar coating that his numbers have regressed so far.

Still, it’s not like the 49ers aren’t feeding Kittle; despite missing one game, he’s already seen 35 targets, and the fact that he’s scored five times already is his saving grace (all coming during a current four-game TD streak). Sure, the yardage isn’t anywhere near where it was last year, but he’s returning to form now and remains a top two option at TE for Week Seven.

Despite the fact that Week Seven offers the 49ers a tough task against KC in a Super Bowl LVIII rematch, Kittle is a solid bet to top 51.5 yards receiving — losing that game is definitely good fuel for the fire. He’s been around long enough that you know the drill by now… he’s used those broad shoulders and waist to carve out a stellar career.

When Kittle was drafted, he was compared to Charles Clay, a very serviceable tight end over his nine-year career. Kittle has blown past that, earning five Pro Bowl appearances and far surpassing Clay’s career numbers — in 24 fewer games played.

Gabe Davis Struggling in Jacksonville

Heading into this season, the Jacksonville Jaguars seemed like a team on the rise, coming off back-to-back nine-win campaigns and seeking to punch a playoff ticket for the second time in three years.

Through six weeks, however, they are staring at an ugly 1-5 record and facing long odds (+146 at FanDuel) to surpass even 6.5 wins this season.

The good news is that this week the Jags face the equally inept New England Patriots is a real treat for London, England fans of a pair of one-win squads. Thanks, NFL!

The biggest issue with Jacksonville so far has been a pop gun attack that has seen the team held to 17 or fewer points four times through six games. To make matters worse, Gabe Davis (knee) was listed as questionable for Week Seven earlier this week, however, as of Friday, it seems he’s good to go.

Being limited for this one would be lousy timing as Davis seemed to be rounding into form with five receptions for 45 yards and a pair of TDs last weekend, even though he took a false start penalty and dropped a pass in the end zone (see video below) — on the opening drive alone.

He looked a rising star in 2022 with Buffalo, when he hauled in 836 yards passing. Last year, Davis regressed a smidge, but he’s fallen off a cliff this year (just 204 yards through a half dozen games) after signing with Jacksonville as a free agent in March for three years and $39 million. In fairness, Trevor Lawrence — although he’s bounced back a smidge this year — is no Josh Allen.

Even if Davis suits up against the Pats, it’s not a great matchup for him given New England’s propensity to employ a two-high formation, a scheme which he doesn’t shine against. If healthy as projected, he’s a borderline WR4 play; but given his wonky knee, you’re better off using another receiver in his place this week.
