For the first time since 2018, the Rays will not be in the postseason this year. Yes, that has been clear for a while, but it’s now official.

The Rays lost in convincing fashion. The offense looked pretty familiar — a Junior Caminero home run:

And a bunch of futile singles.

The pitching side was less typical, since the Rays pitching has been pretty great recently. But tonight the Rays used four pitchers and all four gave up runs.

The Tigers made progress toward their goal of a Wild Card appearance (they were last in the playoffs in 2014) and the Rays are edging toward the close of a frustrating and in many ways forgettable season. Not only did the Rays break their own streak of five consecutive playoff appearances, they also broke a Tampa Bay-wide streak of continuous playoff appearances by the Rays, Lightning and Buccaneers that also goes back to 2019.

But tonight, it’s likely that baseball isn’t front of mind anyway. With Hurricane Helene bearing down, here’s a little sports humor to lighten the mood thanks to our friend Zach Blobner:

If you are up in the Tally/Big Bend area, our thoughts are with you. And even here in the Tampa Bay area, be careful!
