Mets Minors Recap: Carson Benge, Luisangel Acuña Both Homer

0 6

Mets 2024 first-rounder Carson Benge hit his first professional home run on Tuesday with the St. Lucie Mets. Luisangel Acuña had a huge day for Triple-A Syracuse, and Ryan Clifford hit a dinger for Double-A Binghamton.

Triple-A

Lehigh Valley IronPigs (50-63) 6, Syracuse Mets (68-57) 4

BOX SCORE

Acuña had arguably his best day of the season just a few days before the Mets decide on who they will call up for September. Acuña is on the Mets’ 40-man roster.

  • RHP Brandon Sproat (8.83 ERA) 4 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR allowed (53 of 76 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Joey Lucchesi (4.81 ERA) 2 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Brandon Sproat started off the game strong, but unraveled in the fifth inning starting with a David Dahl home run, then hitting the next two batters, then allowing an RBI single, a double-play, then two consecutive RBI hits.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (63-55) 3, Hartford Yard Goats (65-54) 2

BOX SCORE

Ryan Clifford continues his strong second half with another home run, his 15th of the season. Alex Ramirez stole two bases on the day, but his OPS is still barely over .600. Kevin Parada had the day off in what has been a rough month for him.

Infielder Wyatt Young was on base twice and stole his 16th base of the season, and now has a .488 OBP in August.

Jordan Geber looked strong throughout Tuesday’s game, keeping runners off the bases and inducing weak contact from a lineup including Rockies top prospect Adael Amador. Former Mets pitching Brendan Hardy took the loss for Hartford.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (58-63) 3, Winston-Salem Dash (55-66) 2

BOX SCORE

Boston Baro (0-for-3, BB) and Ronald Hernandez (0-for-4) both went hitless in their Cyclones debuts.

Right-handers Eduardo Herrera (1.2 IP, 4 K) and Justin Lawson (1 IP, 8th save) closed out the game for Brooklyn.

Low-A

Jupiter Hammerheads (61-58) 2, St. Lucie Mets (41-78) 4

BOX SCORE

Tuesday saw the future of the Mets have big days at the plate, with 2024 first-round pick Carson Benge hitting his first professional home run and Daiverson Gutierrez making his full-season debut and going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double. Marco Vargas and Jett Williams each walked twice.

  • RHP Edgar Moreta (5.60 ERA) 6 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 HR allowed (53 of 84 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Kyle Crick (3.86 ERA) 1 IP, 1 K
  • RHP Layonel Ovalles (5.92 ERA) 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K

Edgar Moreta put together a great outing, going six strong innings allowing only four hits. The bullpen did the heavy lifting for the remainder of this close game, with Kyle Crick and Layonel Ovalles pitching the final scoreless three innings allowing only a hit and striking out four.
