Blake Snell returns to the PNW

After a thrilling, come-from-behind walkoff win yesterday, the Mariners face a tougher test today in Blake Snell, who’s been excellent lately, seemingly having regained his Cy Young form after failing to secure a long-term deal this off-season. The Shoreline-born Snell will also be pitching in front of a large crew of friends and family against his hometown team—a team he was notably distraught didn’t seem to have any interest in bringing him on this off-season. You see why Snell is a popular target for the sp*rts b*tt*ng crowd today.

Lineups:

The Mariners roll out their righty-heavy lineup to face Snell, which unfortunately means Luke Raley, one of the squad’s hottest hitters, takes a seat to start in favor of Justin Turner. It’s the Randy-JRod-Robles outfield that was promised! Please everyone stay healthy out there.

News:

  • A refreshing lack of news on the Mariners side, but the Giants will be activating Camilo Doval from his punishment assignment to Triple-A:

Game information:

Game time: 1:10 PT, thanks Seahawks for the early start after a late start/extra innings/fireworks night.

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1976: “Mariners” was selected as the team’s nickname after a contest which attracted more than 15,000 entries. The nickname was entered by Roger Szmodis of Bellevue, WA, who mysteriously never collected his prize nor wanted to have anything to do with the team after. Relatable!
  • 1999: Ken Griffey Jr. joins Babe Ruth, Ralph Kiner, Duke Snider, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew and Mark McGwire as the only players to hit 40 homers in four consecutive seasons.
  • 2018: Edwin Díaz recorded his 49th save in a 6-3 win against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field to move into first place in the Mariners’ single-season saves record book, passing Fernando Rodney (48 in 2014).
  • 2022: Playing in his 107th game, Julio Rodríguez becomes the fastest-ever member of the AL to join the 20/20 club, passing Mike Trout.
