RHP Reynaldo López (7-4, 2.12) vs. LHP David Peterson (5-0, 3.14)

The Atlanta Braves snapped the New York Mets winning streak Saturday afternoon setting up a critical last game of the four-game series. A Mets loss today splits the series, which isn’t disastrous by any means, but would lose the team more ground in the tightly-contested wild card race. A win today takes the series and gets the momentum back on track heading into the trade deadline on Tuesday.

Mets Lineup

  1. Francisco Lindor, SS
  2. Jose Iglesias, 2B
  3. Brandon Nimmo, DH
  4. Pete Alonso, 1B
  5. Mark Vientos, 3B
  6. Jeff McNeil, RF
  7. Francisco Alvarez C
  8. Tyrone Taylor, CF
  9. Ben Gamel, LF

David Peterson has pitched 48 2/3 innings over nine starts with a 3.14 ERA, 4.79 FIP, 1.479 WHIP, and a 125 ERA+. Over his last six starts, he has a 2.53 ERA and a 4.96 FIP. For Peterson, he needs to keep the bases clear and pitch count low. He can get himself into trouble walking batters, as he has four starts already this year with at least three walks. The difference for Peterson in 2024 is he doesn’t snowball after that.

Braves Lineup

  1. Adam Duvall, RF
  2. Austin Riley, 3B
  3. Marcell Ozuna, DH
  4. Matt Olson, 1B
  5. Travis d’Arnaud, C
  6. Ramon Laureano, CF
  7. Ignacio Alvarez, 2B
  8. Orlando Arcia, SS
  9. Luke Williams, LF

Reynaldo López is having a career season for the Braves. Over 101 2/3 innings, he has a 2.12 ERA, 3.17 FIP, 1.190 WHIP, and a 195 ERA+. This compared to his career 4.03 ERA, 4.29 FIP, 1.286 WHIP, and 107 ERA+. That being said, he has been a different pitcher his last two starts allowing seven runs over 12 innings from 18 hits, raising his season ERA from 1.71 to 2.12.

His second start this season was against the Mets where he held the Mets scoreless over six innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Pete Alonso 2-5, 2B, 2 BB, K
  • Francisco Alvarez 0-1, K
  • Harrison Bader 1-2
  • José Iglesias 2-13, BB
  • Francisco Lindor 2-21, HR, 3 BB, K
  • J.D. Martinez 5-11, 2 2B, HR, K
  • Jeff McNeil 0-5, BB, 2 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-4, 3 K
  • DJ Stewart 1-4, BB
  • Tyrone Taylor 0-1, K
  • Luis Torrens 0-1
  • Mark Vientos 0-0, BB
  • Jesse Winker 2-3

Game Notes

Late last night, the Mets acquired outfielder Jesse Winker in a trade for pitching prospect Tyler Stuart. Read about the newest Met here.

The Mets announced that newest Met Jesse Winker has been activated and is available off the bench. He will wear No. 3. In the corresponding move, DJ Stewart has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Sean Reid-Foley is set to pitch today for High-A Brooklyn as he works his way back from injury.

Three Things To Watch For

  1. New Mets! The Mets look a little different. A couple of days ago the Mets traded for Ryne Stanek from the Mariners who has been struggling of late, four runs in his last three games. Before that he had a 3.55 ERA and 3.49 FIP over 43 games this season and was a pitcher the Mets were looking at in the offseason. Overnight, the Mets acquired outfielder Jesse Winker who is slashing .257/.374/.419 with an 130 OPS+ this season. Against right-handed pitchers, he’s slashing .266/.390/.450.
  2. Strikeouts. The Mets’ batters had a rough day in the office Saturday, collecting only four hits while striking out 14 times. This includes four strikeouts for J.D. Martinez who had a grand slam the previous day and three punch-outs for Vientos who had a homer on Friday. For Martinez, he’s been locked in a pattern the last six games where he has a multi-hit day followed by a terrible day.
  3. Don’t let the Braves get momentum. After two losses against the Mets, the Braves hit three home runs against the Mets yesterday (Marcell Ozuna, Matt Olson, Eddie Rosario). That was three of their six hits. Peterson and crew need to build off Danny Young’s bullpen performance yesterday where he recorded five strikeouts over two innings.
