Mets Hit Five Home Runs, Complete Subway Series Sweep

Leading the 2024 season-series 3-0, a Subway Series sweep was on the line for the Mets on Wednesday night as they took on the Yankees, who were looking to avoid the sweep, for the final time in 2024 under the lights at Yankee Stadium. Sean Manaea (6-4, 3.74 ERA) got the start for the Mets in an important matchup against Gerrit Cole (3-1, 5.40 ERA coming into Wednesday night) for the home Yankees.

It started as a battle of the bats in the Bronx as neither pitcher could shut down their opposing offenses, but at the end of the day, though Manaea only lasted 4 2/3 innings, the Mets got it done in a huge way as the offense exploded with support from their bullpen when they needed it most. They came away with a very decisive 12-3 beatdown and a 4-0 season-series sweep over the Yankees.

The Mets’ offense slammed the Yankees with 14 hits on the night (over the Yankees’ six hits) on a night in which eight of the nine starters contributed with at least one or more hits. Mets hitters combined for five home runs.

Francisco Lindor led the way. He was 3-for-6 on the night with five of the Mets’ 12 RBIs, two of those on home runs that represented his 20th and 21st of the season. His first home run was a two-run shot in the fifth off Cole. His second home run of the day came in a six-run eighth inning for the Mets. It was a huge three-run blast.

Lindor also now has a 20/20 season. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Lindor also became the only player with at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases since the start of the 2023 season.

Pete Alonso, Tyrone Taylor and Mark Vientos also came up big for the red-hot Mets offense that went on a hit parade down the subway.

Taylor was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. He also had a home run in the game. It was his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot in the top of the third off Cole. He also drove in the Mets’ sixth run on an RBI single to right field in the sixth.

Alonso was 1-for-4 on the night with two RBIs and a run scored. His lone hit was a big one though as he also hit his milestone 20th home run of the year. It was a two-run homer off Cole in the top of the fourth.

Vientos’ homer was his 13th of the year.

Jeff McNeil was also a part of the Mets’ hit fest as he continues to heat up. He was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Jose Iglesias contributed with a hit and a run scored, and Francisco Alvarez snuck in a single in the ninth as well.

Sean Manaea lasted just 4 2/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs on three hits, two home runs, four walks, and four strikeouts before handing the ball to the Mets’ bullpen, which shut down Yankees the remainder of the game. Adam Ottavino, Danny Young, and Alex Young gave up no runs through 3 1/3 innings pitched. Alex Young gave up just one hit.

Adrian Houser came in to close it out for the Mets. He struggled slightly, but finished well after giving up one run on two hits.

Player of the Game

The Metsmerized Player of the Game is Francisco Lindor after his 3-for-6 night, with five RBIs on two home runs.
