Morning Briefing: Kodai Senga Begins Rehab Assignment

Good morning, Mets fans!

Kodai Senga will make his long-awaited return to the mound on Wednesday when he starts his rehab assignment with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on MiLB TV.

J.D. Martinez (day-to-day)was scratched from the lineup with a sore ankle, Brandon Nimmo still wasn’t in the original lineup and Harrison Bader (day-to-day) left the game early after hitting the wall, but the Mets still managed to secure their second extra-inning win. Nimmo played a key role in the win after coming in for Bader with two hits and two RBIs, including a game-tying single in the eighth inning.

For the second straight day, the Mets exploded in the 10th inning, scoring five runs that started with a Jose Iglesias RBI double and was capped by a Pete Alonso two-run homer. José Buttó returned to the big leagues with two key scoreless innings of relief in the eighth and ninth innings. The Mets won 7-2 over the Nationals in Washington.

The Mets and Nationals are back in action on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. ET. Christian Scott (0-2, 3.90 ERA) goes for the Mets against lefty Mitchell Parker (5-4, 3.32 ERA).

Shintaro Fujinami moved to Double-A Binghamton in his rehab assignment. He tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts on eight pitches. It was the third straight perfect rehab outing for the right-handed reliever.

In other hard-throwing reliever news, Bryce Montes de Oca was moved up to Triple-A Syracuse as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. He had two straight scoreless appearances for Binghamton previously.

Martinez said his ankle was sore because Adidas couldn’t get him new cleats in time. He had to order them from Amazon, and he wore them on Monday. The new cleats from Amazon caused the sore ankle.

Pitching prospect Jonah Tong tossed another gem for Brooklyn with five scoreless innings.
