White Sox Minor League Update: June 23, 2024

Among numerous Dash clubbers today, Loidel Chapelli picked up four hits. | S.R. Silver/South Side Sox

A clean sweep for the South Side affiliates — except for the Barons, who lost but still made the playoffs!

Charlotte Knights 7, Gwinnett Stripers 5 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
One unfortunate, five-run inning for the Charlotte pitching staff caused them to battle from behind, but the offense picked up the slack and was able to secure a late-game victory against the Stripers, 7-5.

Mark Payton was absolutely on fire Sunday for the Knights, scoring four of the seven runs, and driving in one (himself), as Payton led off the game with the solo shot for the early lead — homering in back-to-back games. He also walked once, doubled twice, only a triple shy of the cycle.

While chasing four runs, Wilmer Difo launched his own two-run home run in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 5-3. Adisyn Coffey, usually the Charlotte closer, was able to stop the bleeding and get the final out in the fifth inning, and held out strongly for the sixth, giving up just one hit in his 1 1⁄3 innings of work.

Carlos Pérez added another run in the bottom of the fifth, and still chasing a run in the seventh, Zach DeLoach ripped a single to right to tie the game at three.

It was a whole new game for the Knights, with runners on second and third after DeLoach stole second. Rafael Ortega pulled through in the clutch and drove in two insurance runs to put the Knights up, 7-5.

Jordan Leasure would get the win, with Sammy Peralta and Deivi García working efficient innings, not giving up a single hit.

Due to our SSS policy, no polls for this game.

Montgomery Biscuits 5, Birmingham Barons 4 (Gameday box)
The Barons battled a tough game, trading runs back and forth with the Biscuits throughout the game, but ultimately fell to the Biscuits, 5-4.

The good news, however, is that the Birmingham Barons still clinched the Southern League playoffs with a Tennessee Smokie loss!

Winston-Salem Dash 13, Asheville Tourists 3 (Gameday box)
The Dash offense was the main contributor to their win, but the pitching staff did their job and kept the Asheville bats at bay to allow Winston-Salem to mash 13 runs and run away with the game.

Riley Gowens worked six solid innings, and while he did give up three runs on seven hits (including two homers), he struck out a whopping 13 Tourists, earning the win.

Monstrous offensive days from Loidel Chapelli, Ryan Galanie, and Eddie Park contributed to 10 of the 13 runs scored for Winston-Salem. Galanie had an especially impressive day, going 4-for-5, driving in four off a triple, homer, and two base hits — he even stole a base! A truly impressive day.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 2, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1 (Gameday box)
Lucas Gordon led the way with a quality five innings of work, giving up just two hits and striking out five, but he did struggle a bit with four walks. Even though he wasn’t totally sharp, Gordon made it work and powered through with the help of his defense, even picking off a runner in the second.

The Cannon Ballers had nine hits as a team, but were unable to push many across the plate, leaving seven on base as a team and only scoring two runs. Caden Connor’s single in the bottom of the first put Arxy Hernández into scoring position, which allowed him to be driven in the next at-bat, thanks to a sac fly from Ronny Hernandez.

The second and final run scored for the Ballers was George Wolkow sending a deep ball to center, putting Kanny up, 2-0.

The lone run for the Pelicans was a solo home run that was scored in the seventh inning off of Luke Bell, but Nick Altermatt and Jesús Mendez worked the final two innings without giving up a hit, maintaining the lead and securing the win.
