Mets Lag on First Round of All-Star Voting

0 1

Pete Alonso was ranked the highest of five New York Mets who made the list on the first update of All-Star fan voting totals released Monday by Major League Baseball.

Alonso, a three-time All-Star who is tied for second in home runs by National League first basemen with 15, came in fourth with 151,602 votes. The top three were Bryce Harper (1,110,562), Freddie Freeman (713,858) and Matt Olson (154,672). MLB released updates on the top 10 at catcher, the infield positions and DH and the top 20 outfielders.

At shortstop, Francisco Lindor came in seventh (109,221). The leader was Mookie Betts (1,023,690) followed by Trea Turner (509,043) and Elly De La Cruz (324,559).

J.D. Martinez was seventh (67,203) at designated hitter, where Shohei Ohtani (1,002,377) led the way.

The top 20 outfielders included Starling Marte (16th, 144,514) and Harrison Bader (20th, 114,002). The top six outfielders were Jurickson Profar, Christian Yelich, Fernando Tatis Jr., Teoscar Hernández, Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos.

All-Star voting is done in two phases, with the first phase ending at noon ET on June 27. The one player in each league with the most votes at that time will earn an automatic spot on the team. Harper and Aaron Judge are the leaders so far.

It’s highly unlikely based on the voting so far that any Met will be selected to start, but every team gets represented with at least one player at the game. Several Mets have a case: Alonso is the team leader in home runs, Lindor has been hot since moving to the leadoff spot and, despite being lower in the voting than Marte and Bader, Brandon Nimmo is fourth among National League outfielders in fWAR at 1.8. Luis Severino (4-2, 3.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) is another candidate.

Aside from the two who earn automatic spots, the top two at each position and top six in the outfield will advance to the second phase of the voting, which is set to start on June 30. If an outfielder earns a top spot, only the top four will advance to the second phase, which ends July 3. The winners at each position will be revealed on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET on July 3.

The game is July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Pitchers and reserves will be picked by player ballot and the commissioner’s office.

Alonso and Kodai Senga represented the Mets last season.
