Morning Briefing: Mets Record First 20-Hit Game Since 2019

0 3

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets banged out 14 runs on 22 hits as they won in their sixth straight game, routing the Rangers by a score of 14-2. Francisco Lindor went 4-for-4, and Brandon Nimmo, Mark Vientos, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Alvarez each collected three hits. Nimmo homered and drove in four runs, while D.J. Stewart clubbed a three-run shot to cap a six-run second inning.

This marks the first time the Mets have recorded 20 hits in a game since they rapped out 23 on August 15, 2019, against the Braves. On the mound, David Peterson became the first Mets starter to win three straight games, allowing two runs, four hits, and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings.

The Mets will look to keep the good times rolling as they send Luis Severino (4-2, 3.12 ERA) to the mound against 2023 All-Star Michael Lorenzen (4-3, 2.86 ERA). Severino has allowed just two earned runs over 14 innings in his first two starts of June. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.

The Mets officially released Tomás Nido on Monday, ending his 12-year run with the organization. Nido was designated for assignment last Tuesday.

In the first All-Star Ballot update, Pete Alonso is the lone Mets player in the top five in voting at his position, checking in at fourth. Francisco Lindor currently ranks sixth among NL shortstops in votes.

Speaking to reporters before Monday’s game, Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer both spoke highly of the Mets, and said they still keep in touch with their former teammates. Scherzer also spoke about getting traded to Texas last summer, saying it was “a baseball decision”.

“It was unfortunate I was in that position, but everybody had to make a baseball decision on all sides and for me it worked out well,” Scherzer said.

Scherzer also mentioned that he would like to keep pitching after his contract expires at the end of the season. DeGrom, who threw off a mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, said he’s grateful for the time he spent in New York.
