South Side Sox Player of the Week (June 7-13): Garrett Crochet

So, now for the bad news ...

OK, so now for the bad news. Can’t say you didn’t know it was coming.

The flip side of the miracle performance by Garrett Crochet is that, having never started in the majors before 2024 and in fact not even learning to manage a heavier workload in high school, the southpaw phenom will need plenty of rest as the season progresses.

After a few shorter outings in April while still getting his feet wet, Crochet has averaged six innings per start in May and June, never on more than five days’ rest. He’s already piled up 82 2⁄3 innings, which based on reasonable projections of 120 innings for his debut starter set this season puts him two-thirds through his audition. Even if somehow we’re willing to adjust Crochet’s projected workload on the fly, surely he won’t tally more than 150 innings in this most lost of all lost White Sox seasons — and thus, is now past his halfway mark.

So, as Crochet dominates our Player of the Week awards and MVP points like no other player before him at this juncture, here’s a reminder to enjoy our ace now ... he’s due for some summer hibernation soon.
