Andrés Giménez Hits Big Homer in Guardians 6-3 Win Over Mets

0 6

This time, the Mets couldn’t avoid the sweep.

Johnathan Rodriguez singled to right off Reed Garrett for his first major-league hit, driving in a run and breaking a seventh-inning tie, and the Guardians beat the Mets, 6-3, to complete a three-game sweep at Progressive Field.

The Mets (21-28) had shown a knack for avoiding sweeps lately. In their three previous series, New York won the final game of the set after dropping the first two or three. For five innings, it looked like that trend would continue. The Mets led 3-0.

Jose Quintana was on his way to turning in his best performance of the season. He had pitched five scoreless innings when catcher Austin Hedges bunted for a single in the sixth, his first bunt hit in five years. Tyler Freeman doubled Hedges to third, and then with two outs, Andrés Giménez crushed a 3-1 pitch over the right-field wall to tie the game at 3.

Giménez, an ex-Met who was part of the Francisco Lindor trade, had been 0-for-18 in his career against New York before the home run. He jumped and pumped his fist between second and third as he rounded the bases.

Quintana’s final line: 6 innings, three runs, four hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Pete Alonso‘s 11th homer in the first inning gave the Mets their first lead of the series, 1-0. Jeff McNeil homered (3) in the second and Harrison Bader went deep (2) in the fourth.

Trailing 4-3, the Mets had a chance to tie the game in the eighth after Mark Vientos doubled with two outs, but McNeil struck out looking to end the inning. The Guardians (33-17) added two insurance runs off Adam Ottavino in the bottom of the inning.

Vientos is now 7-for-21 with four doubles, one home run and three walks since rejoining the Mets. He has started in back-to-back games against right-handed starters.

Lindor, playing in Cleveland as a visitor for the first time, went 4-for-13 in the series with two doubles. He is hitting .203/.274/360.

Stat of the Game

The loss drops New York’s record in series finales to 12-5.

Player of the Game

Bader was 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base (7). He is hitting .281/.324/.360 for the season.

On Deck

The Mets are off Thursday. They start a 10-game homestand Friday with Christian Scott (0-2, 4.32 ERA) making his fourth major-league start against San Francisco (starting pitcher TBD). The 7:10 p.m. ET game will air on SNY.
