Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Monday, May 20, 2024

Columbus Clippers 3, Louisville Bats 6

Box Score · Clippers fall to 18-26

Columbus actually outhit Louisville in this one, but a lack of clutch hitting and fewer baserunners due to more walks and waaaaay more stolen bases helped push the Bats over the top.

Jose Tena continued his strong resurgence, going 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season.

Juan Brito added a double while Johnkensy Noel wen t2-for-4 and both Micahh Pries and Myles Straw went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Starting pitcher Wes Parsons got tattooed for four runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in just 2 13 innings. The Clippers rotation could use some reinforcements from Akron any day now.

Randy Lebaot and Nick Mikolajchak had the lone scoreless appearances in relief.

Akron RubberDucks 2, Altoona Curve 6

Box Score · RubberDucks fall to 25-14

Akron offense and bullpen ruined another tremendous starting pitching performance, this time from Aaron Davenport, who tossed five scoreless innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts and a walk. Davenport lowered his season ERA to 1.66 in the process. Promote that man!

Davis Sharpe, Hanner and Trey Benton combined to give up six runs in the following three innings in a rough group of relief outings.

Offensively, Joe Lampe had a big day, going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk. He also knocked in both of the RubberDucks’ runs. Kody Huff went 2-for-5 while Khalil Watson went 1-for-4 with a walk and Dayan Frias went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.

Lake County Captains 13, Lansing Lugnuts 9 (F/10)

Box Score · Captains improve to 22-17

Lake County’s offense came roaring to life late to snap the Captains’ three-game losing streak. The Captains scored twice in the ninth to tie the game, then added four more runs in the 10th to outslug Lansing.

Nate Furman had an absolutely insane game, going 4-for-5 with a pair of walks and a stolen base, reaching base safely six times and scoring two runs while driving in two more.

Guy Lipscomb reached base four times, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two more walks, which raised his season OPS over 1.000 to 1.004. Lipscomb has been a revelation this season. He also stole two more bases, raising his season total to 12. One of the man’s walks was even intentional.

Other standouts included Cooper Ingle, who went 3-for-6 with four runs batted in, and Alex Mooney, who reached base in every plate appearance, going 3-for-3 with three walks to also reach base six times.

Pitching was a different story as a normally solid Lake County starter got absolutely shelled for the third straight game. Carter Spivey gave up nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in five innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

The bullpen was tremendous, however, as Jay Driver, Magnus Ellerts and Zach Jacobs combined for five scoreless innings, only giving up two hits while striking out five.

Driver, Ellerts and Jacobs have season ERAs of 0.71, 1.20 and 1.64, respectively.

Lynchburg Hillcats 1, Delmarva Shorebirds 2

Box Score · Hillcats fall to 20-19

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson was on the mound for Lynchburg, so that meant the Hillcats had a chance to win on Sunday.

Tugboat did what Tugboat does, striking out eight and walking none while giving up one run on three hits in five dominant innings of work.

Unfortunately, he took a tough luck loss because Lyncburg’s offense took a nap on Sunday.

Angel Genao went 2-for-4 with a double as the lone Hillcat witha multi-hit game. Ralphy Velazquez was the only other Lynchburg player to reach base safely twice, earning a pair of walks.

Triple-A Columbus had its game postponed due to rain.
