Royals Rumblings - News for April 17, 2024

0 8

Another Wednesday!

The Royals announced a series of events and giveaways to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2014 playoff run.

Cole Ragans answered questions for Dan Connolly of sportskeeda, including reflecting on his journey through two Tommy Johns after he was awarded this year’s Opening Day start:

It’s hard not to reflect. My wife the other day told me that Opening Day was six years to the day I had my first [Tommy John surgery]. I had no idea, but my wife came across a video and it had the date on it. So, that was pretty cool. You always look back, but at the same time, I look forward. I look forward to what’s to come. I’m excited. I’m excited about this team, these guys, and what is to come for all of us.

Former Royal Yuniesky Betancourt is in trouble in Florida for allegedly being part of an insurance fraud scheme involving fake injuries from staged car crashes:

Betancourt, 42, is alleged to have been part of a four-person scheme that staged a car crash and faked injuries to defraud Kemper Insurance. The state’s investigation found that “after the accident report date, all four individuals purportedly sought treatment and physical therapy for injuries they never sustained regarding the accident,” according to a press release. “Kemper Insurance was billed over $61,000 from the two clinics and paid out over $22,800 for therapy billing of which none of the four individuals were entitled.”

“It doesn’t matter how clever you think your scheme may be, if you commit fraud in Florida, you will be caught and brought to justice,” Patronis said in a statement. “Staging accidents is incredibly dangerous and fraud like this costs every Floridian in the form of higher auto insurance premiums. We must continue to work together to do everything we can to uncover these fraud schemes and bring these scam artists to justice.”

Patrick Mahomes mused about playing with the Royals in this TIME profile:

He’s also still fond of baseball. Mahomes is a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, and while he’s not about to pursue a two-sport career like Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson, or quit his sport in his prime to chase a baseball dream like Michael Jordan, he’d like to scratch that itch. “I’ve talked to the Royals,” says Mahomes. “And if I can maybe go out to a spring training, I’m not opposed to that. I’ll get it approved by the Chiefs and everything like that. But maybe one of these years I go out there and see what I got. See if I can still hit the ball or pitch or whatever that is. Maybe not in the games but I can at least practice with them.”

The Rangers are calling up pitching prospect Jack Leiter.

The Brewers sent Christian Yelich to the IL with back issues, and Ozzie Albies of the Braves hit the IL with a broken toe.

What will happen to employees at the Oakland Coliseum as baseball winds down there? Probably nothing good!

David Laurila at FanGraphs collected stories from MLB players about their uniquely Minor League experiences.

Dodgers great Carl Erskine died at age 97, leaving Sandy Koufax as the only survivng Dodger from the 1953 team that reached the World Series.

NBA star Blake Griffin announced his retirement. I haven’t been to many NBA games, but I got to see a healthy Griffin against a healthy Russel Westbrook in a fantastic duel back in like 2016.

A good sale on smoke detectors. $10 is a really good price. Have you tested your smoke detectors lately? Has it been more than 10 years since the date printed on the back? If so, please replace them! Your local fire station may be able to help defray the cost if that is a barrier.
