[Men's Tennis] SDCC To Defend Tourney Title After Taking Out Westcliff
SURPRISE, Ariz. – The San Diego Christian College Hawk's men's tennis team will be defending their 2021 GSAC Tournament title on Thursday after defeating the Westcliff University Warriors 4-0 in their semifinal matchup.
Robin Van den Hoek and Laurenz Grabia got the Hawks on top in the doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Westcliff's Veyhle/Mueller. The Warriors' Goetz and Santos evened things up with a 6-2 win over SDCC's Angel Herreros and Julius Kaufmann in the three spot.
San Diego Christian's reliable, nationally ranked duo of Chris Papa and Nick Nienhaus were able to secure the opening doubles point for their side with a 6-3 win over the Westcliff number one team, Yanase and Talanadler.
In singles, SDCC's Grabia put the Hawks in the driver's seat quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of his Warrior opponent. Papa was the next to tally a victory for San Diego Christian with an equally sound 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of Westcliff's Yanase in the one position.
With SDCC squarely in command of the remaining matches, the race was on for the semifinal clincher. Julius Kaufmann would be the one to have the honor of claiming the team victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Warrior's Santos.
The victory sends the Hawks to tomorrow's championship final where they will defend their title against the winner of the Westmont College/Arizona Christian match. The final begins at 9 am on Thursday.
