[Baseball] Baseball Breaks Out Brooms at Baker

Doane Baseball traveled to Baldwin City, Kansas, with their gloves, bats, and brooms as they came back to Crete with a four-game series sweep of Baker University over the weekend. On Friday afternoon, the Tigers opened with a 6-5 win in nine innings before winning the nightcap, 8-3. Doane completed the sweep by winning twice on Saturday, 6-2 and 10-3.

Game One (Doane 6-5, 9 innings)
Luke LaChance (SO/Littleton, Colo.) had a two-out, RBI-single, to plate James Griess (SO/Sutton, Neb.) in extra innings for the victory. The teams went back-and-forth with Doane leading 2-0, then Baker 4-2, the Tigers tied it at 4-all before Baker went up 5-4 and Doane tied it 5-all in the 6th.

For the game, Doane outhit the Wildcats, 11-9. Andy Theiler (SR/Arlington, Neb.), Justin Nevells (SO/Chugiak, Alaska), and Brett Meyer (SO/Seward, Neb.) had two hits apiece with Theiler scoring twice in the game. Five different players had a RBI for Doane.

On the mound, Julian Vargas (SO/Denver, Colo.) threw 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jackson Stensgard (JR/Maricopa, Ariz.) threw 1.2 scoreless innings and Thaniel Trumper (SO/Fort Collins, Colo.) threw the final 3.0 innings and struck out four batters as he picked up the win.

Game Two (Doane 8-3)
The nightcap had a similar start to game two where the teams went back-and-forth. Doane used a four-run 5th inning to take the lead and pull away for the first day sweep.

Doane, again, outhit the Wildcats in the second game, 6-5, while drawing eight walks on the night. Tiger hits came from six different players with the big hit coming from Drew Norsen (SO/Loveland, Colo.) as he hit a three-run double in the 5th inning. Theiler scored three runs for the Tigers.

Jordan Wisner (SR/Anaheim Hills, Calif.) drew the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters to pick up the win. Kellan Voggesser (SO/Fort Collins, Colo.) came out of the pen in the 5th inning with the bases loaded and struck out the first batter he saw to end the Wildcat threat. He finished with 2.1 innings, striking out three to pick up the save.

Game Three (Doane 6-2)
Doane scored four runs in the first two innings of play and never looked back.

The Tigers had three extra base hits in the game with two coming from Joe Osborn (SO/Hickman, Neb.). He led the team with three hits in the game, including a double and a home run. Osborn scored twice and drove in two runs. Jack Tillman (JR/Omaha, Neb.), LaChance, and Nevells had two hits apiece.

Holding the Wildcats in check was Aaron Forrest (SO/Peoria, Ariz.) as he went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Hyunjun Chung (JR/Seoul, South Korea) threw 1.0 inning and struck out two batters.

Game Four (Doane 10-3)
Baker struck first with two runs in the opening frame. Doane's scoring came in bunches as they plated four runs in the 2nd inning and three in the 4th and 7th innings.

The Tigers held the hit advantage for the game, 8-6, with Doane collecting four extra base hits. LaChance was the lone Tigers to have multiple hits in the game, finishing with two - a double and a triple. He scored twice and drove in two. Osborn and Tanner Black (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.) added two runs apiece while Tillman and Meyer matched LaChance with two RBIs apiece.

Kyler Beekman (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.) made his first start of the season and threw a complete game. He went 7.0 innings and allowed three runs while scattering six hits and striking out eight batters without allowing a walk. Beekman needed only 84 pitches in the effort.
