The Mets announced Monday that third baseman J.D. Davis has been placed on the injured list (retroactive to May 2) due to the hand/finger injury he suffered over the weekend in Philadelphia. Right-handed hurler Trevor Hildenberger has been called up from the alternate site to take his place on the active roster.

While Davis hasn’t been the best third baseman in the field, he’s been hitting very well all year for the Mets. His .479 OBP and 1.089 OPS both lead the team, and his bat will be greatly missed for however long he’s sidelined with this injury.

Hildenberger had a lights-out spring training, pitching to a 2.70 ERA with a massive nine strikeouts across four games (3.1 innings pitched). He appeared in two games back in April, and pitched to a 15.43 ERA after one spotless outing and another one where he struggled. Both of these are small sample sizes, so hopefully Hildenberger was able to touch-up some of his mechanics at the alternate site because New York may be slightly short-handed out of the ‘pen at the start of its series in St. Louis.

Losing Davis is a big blow to the lineup, and with the team announcing earlier that Jonathan Villar would be playing third base Monday night, one can hope he’ll be able to successfully bridge the offensive gap.
