Giants 3, White Sox 1: Still Winless

But at least it wasn’t another tie

The offense decided to pretty much take the day off, leaving the White Sox as the only Cactus League team without a win after the afternoon’s action. That spoiled a very nice day for all the pitchers likely to wear a major league uniform this season, especially newcomer Lance Lynn.

Making his first appearance for the White Sox, Lynn cruised through the Giants, giving up just a walk and notching three K’s in two innings of work. He demonstrated his multitasking skills by combining the first strikeout with an audition for Dancing With the Stars.

Lynn was followed by initial spring appearances by key relievers Evan Marshall and Codi Heuer. Marshall set the Giants down in order, with two faneroonies, but Heuer produced a little unwanted excitement.

With two outs and one on in the fourth, the Gamecast report was “Brandon Crawford singles on a line drive to pitcher Codi Heuer.” That was followed by an ominous, “Game advisory. Injury delay.” Fortunately, Heuer then went on to finish the inning, so all is apparently well. Hard to tell with spring training Gamecast.

That was the end of roster-type pitchers and the end of a scoreless tie. Non-roster-invitee Connor Sadzeck proved to be the day’s Sad Sack, giving up four hits including two homers and three runs. That was all the Giants needed, as their NRI’s held the Sox to one run on a couple of walks, an Andrew Vaughn single and a Leury García fielder’s choice.

The Sox managed three other singles and a Zach Remillard triple, but that was it. One of the singles was from Jonathan Lucroy, who also managed to get through four innings behind the plate without all the awfulness of his first appearance. Catching actual major league pitchers may have helped.

On the catcher competition front, Zach Collins came on in the fifth and actually managed to pick a runner off first — given no video availability, it’s hard to say how that could have happened. Collins balanced it out with a passed ball later in the inning.
