Cochise baseball sweeps Eastern Arizona in conference opener

The Cochise College baseball team opened up ACCAC Conference play with a sweep over Eastern Arizona Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday. Trey Meza got the start for the Apaches and was credited with the victory going four innings, allowing zero runs on five hits, striking out four, and walking one.

Mason Piert and Angel Ortiz entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Cochise scored seven runs in the first inning, leading the way to a 13 to two victory over Eastern Arizona. The Apache hitters who contributed to the big inning included Jimmy De Leon, Cameron Crotte, Cameron Pehrson, Gerardo Hernandez, and Ethan Silcox, who all drove in runs. Cochise added another three runs in the second inning thanks to a triple by Aaron Marsh that scored De Leon and a two-run home run by Eduarny Martinez. The Apaches offense would add another three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving them a 13 to zero lead. Eastern got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, plating two. With a strong pitching performance out of Meza and a solid offensive display, Cochise cruised to a thirteen to two victory. Ethan Silcox went two for two at the plate to led the Apaches in hits.

Cochise turned the ball to Joseph Sinclair to start on the mound in game two of the doubleheader. Sinclair allowed seven hits and five runs over three innings, striking out five and walking one. Cochise trailed in the first third of the game, but the offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs. In the fourth, Connor Caskenette singled on a two and one count, scoring one run. Silcox singled on a two and two count, scoring one run. Jimmy De Leon singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run. Makai Desoto homered on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring three runs. Aaron Marsh singled on one and two counts, scoring one run. Jose Velazquez earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for the Apaches, going four and a third innings, allowing one run on five hits, and striking out one. Marco Ozuna threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

With strong outings from the bullpen and a solid display from the offense, the Apaches ran away with another victory, 13 to six. Cochise totaled 16 hits in the game. Silcox, Marsh, Caskenette, and Desoto each racked up multiple hits for the Apaches. Ethan Silcox would not be denied at the plate on Saturday, picking up four hits and leading the Apaches to a 13 to six win over Eastern Arizona. In the first, Silcox singled in the fourth, tripled in the fifth, and singled in the seventh.
