Mets Claim Stephen Tarpley Off Waivers From Miami
The Mets announced today that they have claimed left handed reliever Stephen Tarpley off waivers from the Miami Marlins.
The Marlins Designated Tarpley for Assignment on the 3rd following the signing of Ross Detwiler.
Tarpley, 27, was drafted by the Orioles in the third round of the 2013 draft, but made his debut for the Yankees after being part of two different trades as a minor leaguer.
Over 44.1 innings in the pros, Tarpley owns a career 6.65 ERA, a 1.79 WHIP, 11.7 K/9, and a 1.6 HR/9.
Tarpley adds much needed depth to a Mets bullpen that only has one lefty on the 40-Man roster: Daniel Zamora. Tarpley also has two minor-league options.
Tarpley’s numbers showed improvement in 2020 when you look deeper than the back of the baseball card.
He dropped his Line Drive Rate from 30.4% to 17.9%, his home run to fly ball ratio fell from 13.0% to 10.0%, and threw 43.6% of his pitches inside the zone, an increase from 36.0%
The 40-Man Roster now stands at 36.
