Cespedes, Davis Could Play First Base in Spring Training

GM Brodie Van Wagenen said on Saturday that the team might use both Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Davis at first base during Spring Training.

“Really, it’s a matter of having as many players capable of playing multiple positions as possible,” Van Wagenen said as detailed by Tim Healey of Newsday.

Before Cespedes got double heel surgery in 2018, the team discussed possibly using him at first base to keep him healthy long-term.

However, the presence of Pete Alonso now makes it hard to envision how either one could get significant playing time at the position during the regular season, especially when it is considered that the team has Dominic Smith and Matt Adams as backup options too.

Davis, Healey notes, will also get playing time at third base and left field.
