Omar Minaya to Scout Yankees Top Prospect Deivi Garcia

0 6

According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets have sent former GM and current talent evaluator Omar Minaya to scout the Yankees’ top pitching prospect, Deivi Garcia.

Garcia has been named the Yankees’ first or second best prospect by multiple major outlets, and was recently named the 25th best prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball Prospectus’s Midseason Top 50.

After starting the year in High-A Tampa, where he made four starts with a 3.06 ERA, Garcia was promoted to Double-A Trenton. He has succeeded there as well, posting a 3.00 ERA in 10 starts. Between High-A and Double-A this season, he has an eye-popping 114 strikeouts in 68.2 innings, good for the second most strikeouts in all of minor league baseball.

Tonight, Garcia is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders against the Columbus Clippers, where Minaya will reportedly be scouting Garcia as a possible trade piece as the deadline looms closer for the Mets. Garcia could very well end up being the centerpiece of a deal for Noah Syndergaard or Zack Wheeler.

At just 20 years old, when Garcia pitches tonight he will be the youngest player currently in Triple-A.

The Mets and Yankees have been talking about some of the Mets’ obvious trade chips for months now, so this is an important development as the Mets look to get back as much value as possible in return. Garcia would be a huge get for the Mets, and would likely be their top prospect.
