KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The score was 36-32 with No. 1 seed Bryan College women's basketball owning a slim four-point lead at halftime of Thursday's Appalachian Athletic Conference opening-round matchup against No. 8 seed Montreat College (N.C.). The Cavaliers were too close for comfort, and the Lions ended any chance of an upset by overwhelming their opponent a staggering 23-4 in the third quarter for an overwhelming 23-point advantage entering the final quarter where the difference never dipped below 20 points, as Bryan earned the 77-52 decision. The win is the No. 12 Lions' 28th consecutive victory, lifting the top-ranked squad to 29-1 overall while closing the chapter on Montreat's season at 13-17. By prevailing, Bryan advances to the semifinal round of the three-day single-elimination event where they will face-off with No. 4 seed Reinhardt University (Ga.) following the Eagles' opening day win over No. 5 seed St. Andrews University (N.C.) 75-57. Bryan and Reinhardt will tip-off at 2pm on Friday, Feb. 22 in Kingsport, Tenn. at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center where the tournament is taking place in conjunction with the men's basketball tournament.
