Making Sense of the Yan Gomes Trade
Well, the first piece of this core group has been sent packing. Gomes certainly had an up and down offensive career in Cleveland, but his defense and work with the staff will be missed. Here's to hoping Roberto Perez takes a step forward.
Gomes made the 2018 All-Star team and returned to relevance on offense. At first glance I didn't like this deal. Still not too sure i do. We seemingly got less than we hoped for with him in a trade...at least from a fan standpoint. It's true all teams and fans value their players more than opposition does. It's human nature. Depending on who you read, Daniel Johnson projects great speed and power combinations, or he is a future 4th OF. He was the Nats 7th best prospect, we will see where he lands in our system. Rodriguez has intrigue due to his stuff. Many believe he's destined for the BP despite the fact he was supposed to compete for a rotation spot next season in Washington. There's also a PTBNL, we have landed one Michael Brantley in the past with such circumstances.
Only time will tell how this one plays out. I fear a regression from our pitchers with losing Gomes. Still, it seems that his value may never have been higher and we may have gotten even less waiting until his walk year.
Good luck Gomer, and thanks for the work you put into this staff. I'm certain you'll be a great coach after your playing days are done.
