Brewers beat Cubs, Dodgers beat Rockies on MLB tiebreaker Monday

It will be Cubs-Rockies in the NL Wild Card Game Tuesday night.

The regular season isn’t over yet for baseball, with not one but two tiebreaker games on Monday, the day after the season was supposed to end.

But 162 games weren’t enough to differentiate a winner in the National League Central between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs, and in the National League West the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies are still deadlocked.

So we get a pair of tiebreaker games on Monday, with the NL Central decided first (1 p.m. ET, ESPN, Watch ESPN) followed by the NL West (4 p.m., ESPN, Watch ESPN).

These are the first tiebreakers in MLB since 2013, when the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers played for a Wild Card berth. This is the first time there have been two sets of tiebreakers in the same year.

The Brewers beat the Cubs in the early game, which involved the teams with the best two records in the National League. The Brewers hadn’t won the division since 2011!

The home plate umpire prematurely rang Jason Heyward up with a called third strike when it was only strike two, and everyone was confused about what was happening. The umpire was immediately embarrassed when he realized what he did and honestly, we can all relate to that.

Chicago had held or tied the top spot in the NL Central every day since July 13 and finished strong with 11 wins in their last 17 games. But Milwaukee has been on fire, going 22-7 to end their regular schedule including victories in their last seven games.

Next for the Brewers: Milwaukee clinched the top seed in the NL, and will host the NLDS at home against the NL Wild Card Game winner. Which could be ... the Cubs again.

Next for the Cubs: Chicago’s loss means they host the NL Wild Card Game at Wrigley on Tuesday night. They’ll play either the Dodgers or the Rockies.

The Dodgers beat the Rockies, and will get to face the Braves in the NLDS

The late game on Monday was at Dodger Stadium thanks to the Dodgers going 12-7 against the Rockies during the regular season. Well, these games were also regular season games and the stats got added to the pile, but you get my point.

Cody Bellinger got the scoring started with a two run smash.

But Max Muncy (that Funky Muncy) wanted in on the home run fun too, and added a two run dinger of his own to double LA’s lead in the fifth inning.

Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story both tried to stave off the inevitable for the Rockies in the ninth with back-to-back home runs, but it wasn’t to be. The Dodgers maintained the lead.

Next for the Dodgers: The Dodgers won 5-2, so will host the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS beginning Thursday.

Next for the Rockies: As the runner-up, the Rockies head to Chicago for an NL Wild Card Game against the Cubs on Tuesday.
