[Football] Mechanics Fall to Widener JV
Williamson knew they would have a big battle on their hands, as they took on backyard neighbor Widener University's JV team on Sunday afternoon. Despite having lost five of the last six meetings between the schools, the last of which was a 31-12 loss, Williamson hung tough until fourteen unanswered points in the final quarter doomed them in a 28-13 loss in Chester, PA.
After Widener scored on their opening drive of the game, Williamson's defense settled down and their offense came alive right before half as quarterback Vince DelPercio (JR/Middletown, DE) connected with receiver Luke Bednar (FR/Monadrock, NH) on a 28-yard TD reception right before half to tie things up at 7-7 at the break.
Widener went back on top with 8 minutes left in the third quarter before Williamson's Mike O'Chuida intercepted a pass deep in Widener territory as time was winding down in the third quarter. Two plays later, David Williams (FR/Philadelphia, PA) scored on a nine-yard run to pull Williamson within one. The Mechanics missed the extra point to make it 14-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Widener's JV used two big plays to pull away in the fourth. The first was a 50-yard jet-sweep run that gave them a first and goal from the two-yard line. They eventually scored on that possession.
The second big play was a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown with 4:33 left in the game that iced things for the Pride.
Williamson was led by Vince DelPercio on offense with 48 yards rushing, while seven different Mechanic players each had a catch. On defense, Gino DiCamillo (JR/Broomall. PA) had nine tackles, two hurries and a fumble recovery while Mike Shanahan had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
Williamson has a short week as they try to get ready for George Mason University at home next Saturday, September 30 at 1:00 P.M.
