[Football] Mechanics Score Early and Often in Win Over Gattaca
Williamson races to 39-0 halftime lead, forces eight turnovers in 45-20 triumph
Last year's football game between Williamson and Gattaca came down to the wire. This year, Williamson made sure it would not do so again as they scored 26 first quarter points and used eight turnovers, two of which went for scores, to defeat Gattaca by a score of 45-20 on Saturday in Media, PA.
Williamson used a nine play, 52-yard drive to start the game, capped off by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Vince DelPercio (JR/Middletown, DE) to Darnell Wideman (FR/Chester, PA) to go up 6-0.
It was then Gattaca's turn on offense and on their first play from scrimmage, Ed Sykes (JR/Boothwyn, PA) intercepted a pass and took it to the Gattaca 13-yard line where one play later, Andrew Hicks (SR/Dear, DE) scored on a 13-yard TD run to put Williamson up 13-0.
DelPercio and Wideman then connected again, this time on a third-down pass play that went for 74 yards and a touchdown to put Williamson up 19-0. Freshman David Williams (FR/Philadelphia, PA) added a 2-yard TD run with 4:32 left in the first quarter to put Williamson up 26-0 after one quarter.
Williamson added a 2-yard Dwayne Parent (JR/Brookhaven, PA) run with 5:36 left in the second quarter to increase their lead before King David Bey (FR/Sicklerville, NJ) scooped up a Gattaca fumble and returned it 47 yards for a TD with just 35 seconds left in the half to give Williamson a 39-0 halftime lead.
After Gattaca scored their first TD of the game with 10:21 to go in the third quarter, on Gattaca's next possession, Williamson's George Bradley (FR/Chester, PA) then picked off a Keyon Spain pass and raced 51 yards to the end zone. Gattaca scored twice late in the game to close out the scoring, but it was long over by then.
In a case where clearly total yardage means nothing, Gattaca outgained Williamson on the day by a 385-249. The reason the yardage meant nothing was that Williamson intercepted six passes and also recovered two fumbles on the day. Fresh off a three interception performance last week, Jack Gibson (FR/Rutledge, PA) picked off two more passes for Williamson this week. In addition to his and the earlier picks by Ed Sykes and George Bradley, David Derby and Gino DiCamillo (JR/Broomall. PA) also intercepted passes for the Mechanics.
Andrew Hicks led Williamson with 78 yards rushing on 13 carries, while David Williams added 33 yards on six carries. Darnell Wideman had 101 yards receiving to lead the Mechanics through the air.
With the win, Williamson moves to 2-0. They face their first road game of the year next week when they travel to Chester, PA to take on Widener University's JV team in a 1:00 P.M. start.
