Mariners bring up INF Gordon Beckham, DFA Shawn O’Malley

0

The Seattle Mariners made a roster move today, selecting infielder Gordon Beckham from Triple-A Tacoma. To make room on the 40-man roster, utility man/scrappy little engine that could Shawn O’Malley has been designated for assignment:

The Mariners signed Beckham in the final hours of Spring Training and the veteran infielder has spent the entirety of the season in Triple-A Tacoma, with a lengthy disabled list trip mixed in. In 83 games with the Rainiers, he slashed .262/.313/.393 with 9 home runs, 16 doubles, and 3 stolen bases. Beckham is best remembered for a seven-year run with the Chicago White Sox from 2009-2015. If we do see him in action this month, it will likely be in a very limited defensive role, with perhaps an occasional pinch hit duty mixed in.

Meanwhile, the O’Malley DFA comes after a year-long attempt by O’Malley to work his way back from multiple ailments (shoulder injury and appendectomy). He had successful rehab stints with both the AZL Mariners and Double-A Arkansas, but he struggled in limited action with the Rainiers, hitting just .205/.250/.282 through his first 84 plate appearances. If this is the end for him in the organization, we’ll always have that time he hit that big ol’ dinger.
